Ask a local where to eat in Tirana. Watch them change the subject.

Wooden signposts outside VENA wine bar in Tirana pointing to Bourgogne, Barolo, Napa Valley, Kallmet and VENA 0 KM

Resto Editorial · 29 August 2026 · 3 min read

There's a wine bar off Komuna e Parisit that the regulars would rather you didn't find. 500 labels, snails on the menu, and a signpost that reads VENA, 0 KM.

Ask someone who actually lives in Tirana where they eat and you get one of two answers.

Either the list everyone already has: the terrace, the queue, the place that photographs well. Or a pause, and then a change of subject.

The pause is the interesting one. It usually means there's somewhere they'd rather keep to themselves.

Follow the signposts

VENA sits on the corner of Rruga Komuna e Parisit and Rruga Njazi Demi, which is not a corner anyone stumbles onto. Outside, wooden signs point in directions nobody in Tirana is driving. Reims, 2,044 km. Bourgogne, 1,716. Barolo, 1,250. Napa Valley, 10,363.

Then, near the bottom of the post, Kallmet, 75 km, the Albanian grape from the hills above Lezha. And then the last sign of all: VENA, 0 KM.

It's a joke about a wine list. It's also the entire idea of the place. Everything on those shelves travelled to get here. You're already standing at the destination.

The room

Inside VENA wine bar Tirana, gilt mirror, patterned curtains and a glass cabinet in the dining room

Heavy curtains, a gilt mirror, wallpaper, lamps that were chosen rather than specified. It has the feel of a front room belonging to someone who collects things. Tables sit close together, which is either the problem or the point depending on who you came with.

There are a couple of distinct spaces, so when you book, pick a room rather than leaving it to chance.

The food they'd rather you didn't post

Wine bars in Tirana usually mean a cheese board and a shrug. This kitchen goes somewhere else.

Escargot Bourguignonne at VENA Tirana, snails baked in butter and herbs in a clay dish with tongs

The Escargot Bourguignonne arrives in a clay dish, baked in butter and herbs, tongs on the side, six pieces or twelve. Nobody styled it for a camera. Order it anyway. It's the best thing that will land on your table.

Trippa at VENA Tirana, crisp fried veal tripe with green chilli sauce and rosemary

The rest of the list keeps that nerve. Trippa with green chilli sauce. Breaded fried liver with lime cream. A plate simply called Tradita: meatballs, byrek me qumësht, fërgesë with veal liver, white cheese fried with almonds. An Albanian plate hiding inside an Italian menu, which is more or less what this restaurant is.

If you want the easy end, it's there too: burrata with Cantabrian anchovies, Jamón Ibérico de bellota, Polpette al Sugo, rigatoni alla gricia, piadina. Boards like Bel Paese and Il Casaro are the default order for a group and there's no shame in it.

The wine list

The cellar wall at VENA wine bar Tirana, shelves of red wine bottles behind red curtains

Over 500 labels, and a sommelier, Fation Tila, who built the cellar himself. The by-the-glass selection changes daily.

Which means the correct move here is to leave the list alone. Say what you usually drink, say roughly what you want to spend, and let them open something. That's the service you came for. Reading a 500-label list to yourself is just homework.
